Can Nadal Bounce Back and Win French Open?

Rafael Nadal’s 2023 did not get off to the best start, as the sensational Spaniard was beaten in straight sets by Californian Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the Australian Open. However, with his favourite tournament coming up next on the 2023 Grand Slam schedule, can Nadal bounce back and secure another French Open title?

The King of Clay

Nadal is the unrivalled king of clay, winning the French Open a staggering 14 times. For those after the best odds on tennis, the five-time Davis Cup winner is available at a price of 5/2 to win this year’s French Open. Looking at the latest French Open betting odds, in-form Djokovic will head to Paris as the bookies’ favourite at 7/4. Nadal always saved his best tennis for the Roland Garros courts. His last French Open triumph came last year, and Nadal will be eager to keep hold of his crown in 2023.

The Mallorca-born ace has had an exceptional career. Along with his 14 French Open titles, he has won the Australian Open on two occasions, including last year, and has won Wimbledon twice. Nadal has also been the US Open champion four times, with the last of those victories coming in 2019.

His record at the French Open is nothing short of extraordinary. Nadal loves the clay, with the surface allowing him to play his aggressive and expansive game. He picked up his first Grand Slam win at the French Open in 2005 just two days after his 19th birthday and has never looked back.

Nadal won five successive Paris tournaments from 2010 to 2014. He also won four French Open’s in a row until Novak Djokovic prevailed in 2021. A year later, the Spanish ace got his trophy back with a superb tournament victory in France’s capital. The 2022 win was his 22nd Grand Slam victory.

Can Nadal Claim 15th Win?

At 36 years old, Nadal is coming to the latter stages of his memorable career. It remains to be seen how long he has left and whether he has another Grand Slam victory in him. He had a disappointing Australian Open at the start of the year. He was the defending champion but was beaten in round two by McDonald in straight sets at Rod Laver Arena.

However, Roger Federer stayed at the top of his game until his retirement last year, while Novak Djokovic, who is a year younger than Nadal, is still winning majors left, right and centre.

In terms of Grand Slam wins, Nadal is right up there with the best. Many regard Federer to be the best player of all time in the men’s game, but Nadal has won two more majors than the great Swiss.

This year’s French Open will take place from May to June at Roland Garros Stadium in Paris and will be the 127th edition of the famous tournament. Can Nadal win a 15th French Open on the outdoor clay courts and a 23rd Grand Slam in total?
