Champions League ties offer tasty treat for football betting punters
The quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League begin next week with two gripping ties that are bound to get the heart pumping for football punters out there.

Barcelona host Atletico Madrid in an all-Spanish affair and Manchester United look to do the impossible and overcome Bayern Munich in their first leg on Tuesday.

A day later, Paris Saint-Germain entertain Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea while Real Madrid wrap up the ties against Borussia Dortmund.

For plenty of punters, the entertainment won’t just stop with the football, for there is some serious profit to be made from these ties. And, for the first time in a long time, predicting the outcome to each first-leg game should be straight forward.

Those who bet with will be aware how lucrative a successful accumulator can be. Accas are the best way of backing dead-certs and generating a potentially hefty profit from them. They involve backing the results of a number of matches, all of which must come through.

This midweek, accumulator seekers could do a lot worse than following the Champions League, so let’s dissect the probable outcomes on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Barcelona rampaged past Manchester City in the previous knock-out round and are locked in a battle with Atletico for the Liga title after scoring 12 goals in three home games. Madrid, meanwhile, are in better form with five straight victories (as of Friday) but crucially these sides have drawn their three head-to-heads this season.

Although Atletico have not won at the Nou Camp since February 2006, the likelihood of a draw this week – especially considering this is only the first leg – is worth the 4.33 price.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will now focus all their attention on Europe after wrapping up the Bundesliga title last weekend. The German champions should overpower Manchester United in midfield, stifle the advances of lone forward Wayne Rooney and pick apart a defence that crumbled against Manchester City last Tuesday night. At 1.44, Munich are as safe as bet as any to win.

On Wednesday, assuming you’re acca is still active, a draw or narrow defeat for Chelsea is most likely in Paris, for PSG are rampant at home and Mourinho is unlikely to dedicate too many men forward but instead wait for the return leg to strike. Chelsea are confident enough to park the Blue bus all night and carry a one-goal deficit back to Stamford Bridge, and so PSG are a good win/draw bet at 1.28 on the Double Chance.

That leaves rampant Real Madrid versus a Dortmund side that has lost its way in recent weeks. Their 2-1 home defeat to Zenit in the previous round was enough to still see Dortmund through but punters can expect Madrid to inflict the same pain on last year’s Champions League finalists as Schalke received at the hands of the Galacticos in February. Madrid to win, at 1.36, is the jewel in your accumulator.

So, although two teams are no certainties to win their matches, a Champions League accumulator is still the best way to bet on European football this week.
