Del Potro tipped for Sydney title |
|
|
|
World No. 5 Juan Martin del
Potro will complete his Australian Open preparations by competing at
the Apia International Sydney before the opening Grand Slam of the season.
The Argentinean will lead a strong mens field in Sydney, beginning the
tournament as a strong favourite with Betfair.
With 25 of the
worlds top-50 players, del Potro will be joined in the draw with world
No. 13 Nicolas Almagro of Spain and Italian world No. 16 Fabio
Fognini among the highly-ranked players that will compete for the title in
Sydney.
Australian No.1 Bernard Tomic has been given a wild card in
order to ensure his participation in the tournament, with his
current ranking
of No. 51 meaning he currently falls short of automatically qualifying for the
draw. But despite a mixed 2013, Tomic is rightly being tipped by Betfair
to be among the contenders to win the tournament next month.
Wimbledon semi-finalist and World No. 21 Jerzy Janowicz is
another name who will begin the tournament among the favourites for the title,
with a powerful serve and big ground-strokes that could be key to victory in
Sydney. .
Also returning to the tournament will be former
champions Jarkko Nieminen and Dmitry Tursunov, both of whom who are
being backed by Betfair customers going into the final warm-up event
before the Australian Open.
Apia International Sydney Tournament
Director Craig Watson is delighted to have such a strong field assembled for
the event.
To have our defending champions, seven top 10 stars and
three Grand Slam champions bound for Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre is an
outstanding result for the event and an exciting prospect for Sydney tennis
fans, Watson said. |
