UEFA Champions League Which Teams Will
Progress To The Round Of 16? |
|
|
|
|
The greatest tournament in
European club football is well underway, and there is only one group game left
before the knockout rounds recommence in the New Year. If youve ever
been, you will know that there is nothing quite like the magic of seeing a
Champions League game live. Remember to
apply for an E111 card
online before you go and enjoy the football at the likes of Camp Nou,
Bernabeu and the King Power Stadium. With that in mind, here is a breakdown of
each group and who is likely to qualify for the round of 16. |
|
Group A An open-shut
case already as Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain have both guaranteed their
place in the final 16, the only thing that is yet to be determined is who will
finish first or second. That means we are guaranteed some Champions League
action at the Emirates and the Parc des Princes in the New Year. Meanwhile,
Ludogorets Razgrad and Basel will battle it out for a Europa League
place.
Group B A far more open group sees Napoli, Benfica and
Besiktas can still mathematically qualify, although ultimately one of them will
miss out. Besiktas have the best chance of qualifying as they only need to beat
Dynamo Kyiv, who are yet to win a game and are already out of the competition.
Napoli and Benfica will have to go through each other in order to qualify. This
is a must win scenario for Benfica as a draw could be enough for Napoli.
Group C This group is already closed for business, the final
game is just a formality. Barcelona will finish top, ensuring Champions League
matches will continue to be hosted at Nou Camp, the same for Manchester City
and the Etihad. Borussia Mönchengladbach, meanwhile, will finish third and
transfer to the Europa League, Celtic are out.
Group
D Athletico Madrid have already confirmed themselves as the top spot of
Group D, they will play the mighty Bayern Munich, who will have to settle for
second place this year, in the final group game. The Champions League was the
only trophy that Guardiola never brought to the Allianz Arena during his time
as manager, Carlo Ancelotti still has that opportunity this year. Meanwhile,
Rostov and PSV Eindhoven are currently separated by three points in the bottom
half of the table, they will play each other for a Europa League
place.
Group E Monaco have already booked their place in the
last 16, with an impressive unbeaten record in the competition, they top Group
E, while Bayer Leverkusen will finish second. Tottenham Hotspur have been
playing their home games at Wembley during this European campaign. The grandeur
of the moment seems to have stunned them as they are already out of the
competition after a number of lacklustre performances. However, they can still
qualify for the Europa League with a win or draw against CSKA
Moscow.
Group F Borussia Dortmund (currently top) and Real
Madrid have already confirmed their spot in the last 16, mathematically. They
will just play each other to determine who will finish top. Sporting Lisbon
(Ronaldos first club) will land in the Europa League while Legia Warsaw
are out.
Group G What a tournament it has been for Leicester
City, the ultimate underdog story continues for the Foxes in Europe. They are
yet to lose a Champions League game and have confirmed their place in the last
16 by finishing top. Meanwhile, Porto and Copenhagen are still within a shout
of finishing second, but Club Brugge are out.
Group
H Juventus have already confirmed their place in the knockout stages.
Meanwhile, Sevilla and Lyon will battle it out for second place, the loser will
have to settle for a Europa League spot. Dinamo Zagreb are already out after
five consecutive losses.
