T plus 2 - The second day one in a row

Because of the size of this years field for the championship
event, day 1 has been spread over three days, that is one third of the field
plays on each of the first three days. This in theory should result in the
field being reduced to under 2000 players and thus enabling all remaining
players to play together on day 2 (the fourth day into the event).

It
was a dynamic day of action with many star players exiting, Daniel Negreanu,
Todd Brunson, Tobey Maguire, Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke,
Robert Varkonyi and Men the Master. In order
not to disadvantage people playing on day 1A, this field had to play the exact
same amount of time, i.e. 40 minutes into Round Right. That is 2:30 a.m., all
of 15 and a half hours of play. The playing hall started with around 1800
players, 200 press and 500 spectators. By the evening of the day the air
conditioning had lost the battle once again, it was hot.
Daniel Negreanu is probably relieved to be out
early so that he can get back to Steve Wynn's casino. Wynn has always been
intrigued by poker players ever since the days when he owned the Golden Nugget
downtown. There he opened a poker room to rival Binions just across the street
and hired the famous Eric Drache to be cardroom manager. Later Wynn opened the
upmarket Mirage in the heart of the strip where he opened another poker
room, once again run by Eric. Later Eric faced IRS charges amounting to
millions of dollars in supposedly unpaid taxes and lost his gaming license in
the subsequent hearing. Steve Wynn is however back in the poker party by
backing Daniel Negreanu to play all-comers for stakes between $100,000 and
$500,000 in almost 'any' poker game variant.
The days coverage was
gratefully broken-up by being forced to attend the party run by Doyle Brunson
ant Tribecca who run the software for our poker site
GGGPoker. Great fun was had
by all and they even supplied us with Go-Go
dancers.
Back to the world of Las Vegas. I've
been staying in the Gold Coast for 5 days now, having moved from Ballys in the
middle of the strip. The five minute walk across the road from the Gold Coast
to the Rio in one hundred plus degrees has been getting on my nerves. Then just
last night I was on my way back to the scene of the poker crime when I was
confronted by a man weaaring only the smallest pair of underpants that you can
imagine as I left my room. He was no Chippendale. He approached me and I
obviously thought the worst, that he was from San Fransisco. But
no.
"Hey man, know where's the ice machine?"
I pointed him in the
right direction and left at speed. Later in the evening I returned to my hotel
room. Falling exhausted on the bed I switched on the TV and on chanel 10 I
found "Are you being served?", a British TV sitcom from the 1970s.
Arrrrhhhhhhh.
So I called the Rio to book a room and mistakingly replied
to the receptionist's question that I was here for the poker. "Well", she said,
"we have a poker rate, its $128 a day".
"What's the normal rate", I
shoved in realising my error.
"You don't want the special poker?", she
continued, "caus we don't have normal rates".
"Well eh, how much is the
daily rate?"
"Its 110 Sunday, 90 on Monday and Tuesday and 80
Wednesday", she said without any notable change in tone.
"Great,
that'll do", I said.
"So you still don't want the poker rate?"
Get me out of here.
