Lookout for Payout Percentage in Online Slot Games

There are many hundred slot games out there from good reputable software manufacturers who collectively supply all the good, safe and secure sites. But it is easy to assume that only the graphics, game and bonus are different, with the machine underneath being identical for each manufacturer. This is not the case. The payout percentages do vary from game to game and can vary quite a lot.

Payout Percentage
Payout Percentage is often called Return to Player (RTP) and it is the amount the slot is programmed in the factory to payout over a period of time. So for example if you are playing real world slot machines in Nevada, the lowest the RTP can be allowed to be is 75%, which is really poor compared to most online slots at around 95%. What this means is that a slot with an RTP of 95%, playing $1 per spin over a million spins, will payout on average $950,000.

Online versus Offline Slot Machines
Historically real world manufactures have been reluctant to make available the RTP for their machines where as in the online world these figures are available. An individual slot review site like MySlotMachines.co.uk lists many details about each game including the Payout Percentage (same as RTP) and the house edge against the player.

It is surprising to note that in the United Kingdon there is no statutory minimum payout for a gaming machine and also no minimum for the software manufacturers that they license. For real world machines made before 2007, known as "legacy gaming machines", there is a technical standard that requires a minimum of 70% RTP, which is really terrible.

So above we have a selection of available slots from the many hundreds. Most of the hundred we looked at have an RTP of 96%, which is a house edge of 4%. For a slot this is quite good. But as you can see the house edge can be anything from 3% to double that of 6%. If you are going to be playing slots for an extended amount of time then this is a huge difference to you and you need to check these details before settling into a long session, it really will make a difference.

Progressive Jackpots
If you want a realistic chance of winning in a session's play you should probably avoid the Progressive Jackpots because all the time you are playing, a slice of the money you are entering is going towards this big jackpot. When the jackpot is won is makes up a good part of the RTP and for you to benefit you have to be the jackpot winner. So non-progressive will be paying out more normal prizes throughout your session play.

Licence
If you are gambling in the United Kingdom then any site you visit will need a remote gambling license from the UK Gambling Commission, it does not matter if they have one from another jurisdiction. If they don't have a UK licence we suggest you give them a pass. So to be safe and sure, head to the Find licensees search page on their website and the site name. If you don't find it then move on to another site.
