Big Deal:
Complete BBC Series 1
(1984)

A long overdue release on DVD for one of the best TV drama series from the 1980s.

Big Deal had all the components of a cracking TV drama : great acting especially from Ray Brooks and Sharon Duce, tension, excitement, sadness and exhilaration

Great series for anyone who likes a bit of the down-at-heel in London stuff. Wry and pretty accurate really - better than Minder although in similar terrain. Well written, well acted, nicely filmed.

The card play is accurate for the time, as are the games and speilers that were in action in the 1980s. In that respect its out of date but its much more enjoyable seeing a realistic portrail of a real player and just what the life of professional gambler (however half baked Robbie Box is) really is.

This is a production by the BBC and nice to see what quality drama is like.

Ray Brooks is excellent as the main character, his style is natural and he makes the situations seem effortlessly convincing. The supporting cast are all very decent actors and the episodes fly by, leaving you eager for the next.

From a gambling point of view this is an historical record of the way things used to be and much of the sub-plots in gambling of the 1980s still applies today, albeit with better technology. There are still the dodgey games and sure things at the racetrack that are in pretty much every episode of which there are ten!

Absolutely fantastic value for the price.

Score 10 out of 10 for very good all round.
