The Evolution Of Casinos

The first recorded gambling house in Europe was the Ridotto

Games of chance have been played through the ages, with records from ancient Greece and Rome showing evidence of different gambling games being played. There’s even an account of Chines gambling dating back to 2300BC.

Nowadays, millions of people go online every day to gamble at online casinos. You can find many online casino sites reviewed here, so that you know where to go for the best bonuses, the best games and the most enjoyable player experience.

The online casino has become a part of everyday life, in a way that land-based casinos never really have been. Land-based casinos are places that a minority of the population would actually go, whereas online casinos have brought the possibility of playing casino games into every home. But how did we get to where we are today?

The first recorded gambling house in Europe was the Ridotto, in Venice. It was opened in 1638 as a way of providing gambling under controlled conditions during the Carnevale period. Over a hundred years later, in 1770, the Venice city government closed the Ridotto down as it was seen as causing impoverishment to local merchants.

American history shows gambling taking place in saloons, especially in the cities of Chicago, San Francisco, St Louis and New Orleans. Saloons were also places for travellers to stop for refreshments and meet others, and gambling was there as a form of entertainment. Saloons went out of fashion when social reformers and state legislation banned gambling in the early 20th century.

The state of Nevada was the first state to legalise gambling in 1931 and this is where the first legal casinos were established. Because of this, during the twentieth century, America was the country, and more precisely the city of Las Vegas was most readily associated with casinos. The city of Las Vegas rose from the desert on the back of legalised gambling and is still the casino capital of the world today. Later in the twentieth century, the state of New Jersey also legalised gambling in Atlantic City, which is now the second gambling city in the United States.

But land-based casinos only ever served a tiny proportion of the world’s population. Not everyone lived within a comfortable distance of a casino, and not all of those who did would go to them anyway. .

The transition to online casinos has really meant that anyone can play casino games, no matter where they are. Vast numbers of people who would never have visited a land-based casino play casino games online. You can just ‘have a go’ at gambling to see if you like it, you don’t have to commit more than a few minutes to it, and you don’t even need to put any money down. Pretty much all of the casino sites let you play in demo mode, which means you can try out whichever games you want without paying to do so.

We don’t know what’s next in the world of casinos, but one thing’s for sure, playing casino games is more popular than ever before!
